COQB - Instructors

Both continuing education and standard certificate course instructors must be approved by the Board. We have categorized the requirements needed for approval by instructor types.

Continuing Education Instructors

Instructor Certification:

Instructors shall have a minimum of one year of experience in architecture; engineering; construction; inspection; installation of equipment, building materials, or components; or other Code-related areas which shall be pertinent to the nature and purpose of the course(s) for which they will provide instruction. Instructors shall possess the ability to:

(1) Communicate through speech, with the ability to speak clearly, and with voice inflection, using proper grammar and vocabulary;
(2) Present instruction in a thorough, accurate, logical, orderly and understandable manner;
(3) Use varied instructional techniques in addition to straight lecture, such as class discussion, role-playing, or other techniques; and
(4) Use instructional aids, such as projectors and computers to enhance learning.

Instructor Certification:

Anyone planning to teach any of the Board's courses for persons to qualify to take the Code Officials Qualification Board's State Examinations is required to complete the following steps prior to teaching the courses.

Apply to be a Course Instructor

1. Read the General Statutes and Rules of the Board Pertaining to Code Enforcement Officials and carefully examine the information contained in the course manuals.

2. Submit an online application for Instructor Certification to Conduct Code Enforcement Courses.

Note: As indicated by the criteria, the Board's Law and Administration course must be taught by an attorney.

Standard Certificate Instructors must use current editions of all code books, including the most recent amendments to the North Carolina State Building Code.  To purchase code books, visit the NCOSFM Code Book Sales page.
