Qualification School
Fireground Ops 9 - Under 18 Participation Process
This is a process. Please do not wait until the week of class to start this process.
Firefighters under the age of 18 may only take Fireground Ops 9 after they have completed ALL other modules in the Firefighter Certification Series. Upon completion of all other courses in the Firefighter Series, the under 18 firefighter who wants to take the Fireground Ops 9 course will complete the following steps:
- Student will utilize their OSFM24 profile to access the "Fire and Rescue Training Registration" link to register for "Under 18 Fireground Ops 9 Verification.
Students will be automatically notified by OSFM24 of their registration status.
If the registration is denied, the student does not have all the required courses reflected in the system. It they believe that this message has been received in error, they should contact Greg Palmer, Commission Staff Supervisor, at greg.palmer@ncdoi.gov to research further.
If the registration is approved, the student has completed all required courses and will receive an automatic approved email from OSFM24. They will receive additional information from OSFM staff within 3-5 business days of their submitted registration.
- Once approved registrations are received by OSFM staff, the Course Participation Letter will be emailed to the Firefighter, with approval to participate in the Fireground Ops 9 course. Each letter will be assigned an official OSFM reference number for recordkeeping and verification purposes. A copy of the letter will also be uploaded to the firefighter's profile in OSFM24.
- The Course Participation Letter includes four (4) signature lines: Fire Chief, the Parent or Guardian, School Director, and Live Fire Instructor-in-charge. All signatures must be present for the firefighter to participate.
When a student under the age of 18 registers for a Fireground Ops 9 course, the Delivery Agency will be required to ask for a copy of the Course Participation Letter. This letter should be maintained with their documentation for the course. If the student cannot produce a Course Participation Letter, they should not be allowed to register for the course.
The Course Participation Letter only allows for participation in the Fireground Ops 9 course. The change in Certification Board Policy, precludes anyone under the age of 18 from participating as a part of a Live Fire Training being conducted by a Fire & Rescue Commission Live Fire Qualified Instructor that is outside of a Firefighter Certification Fireground Ops 9 course. Additionally, the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) has the authority to preclude a member of the department from taking Fireground Ops 9 if the department's policy does not allow anyone under the age of 18 to participate in Live Fire Training.
For additional information on the verification process or if you believe your verification has been denied in error, please contact Greg Palmer, Commission Staff Supervisor, at greg.palmer@ncdoi.gov .
